My Grandma

Last Sunday, my dear Grandma went to Heaven. Almost a week has gone by and it still feels horrible, like I fell and had the air knocked out of me. My heart feels deflated. I DO know that it was for the best, she lived such a wonderful full life and accomplished so much. I love her so much, and hope that I will be the same Grandma that she was to me, as a child and an adult. I am so happy that we were able to live close to each other for most of my life. Not all are as blessed as I was.

Things that make me smile about my Grandma:

1.) Her smile

2.) Her hugs and kisses. SOMETIMES the kisses were kind of wet, I didn't like that.

3.) Her dislike for makeup, sleeveless shirts, short shorts and jewelry...on ANYBODY! She was very conservative and didn't want any of us looking like floozies.

4.) Her skills at playing Boggle. (VERY competitive, she would make up words and insist that they were real, and get a little annoyed if we looked it up in the dictionary.)

5.) Her yummy food (most of the time) A recipe would never taste the same twice, because she didn't USE recipes.

6.) Her patience...and sometimes LACK of patience with me. ( I can laugh about it now, I am a mother, and realize she was very patient with me, even when I didn't deserve it. )

7.) Her green thumb and African Violets.

8.) Her decorated Christmas tree. (with home made paper ornaments and glass balls that were probably 30 years old. She never bought new. Her Christmas tree looked the same year after year after year....)

9.) Her art and art supplies. We could never touch her paints with out her painting with us. She actually kept them hidden.

10.) Her hands. Mine look like hers.

11.) Her SINGING! It's wasn't the best now that I look back, but I loved it. She sang me to sleep many times.

12.) Her LOVE for chocolate and sweets. She would hide that too.

13.) Before anyone would leave her house after a visit, she would search hurriedly for something to send home with us. I do the EXACT same thing.

14.) Her fear of other people driving, but she RARELY drove.

15.) Her LOVE of mom's homemade tacos.

16.) Her love of pink.

17.) She would stop anything she was doing in order to spend time visting.

18.) Her love for animals, especially birds. ( I don't like birds)

19.) Her love and excitement for life.

20.) Her devout, deep love for God, Grandpa, and her entire family.

I am very relieved that she is in peace and with Grandpa. I am SURE that they are in a better place, sitting in a garden swing holding hands and singing.

That makes me smile too.

Trina, this was an awesome thing to do! I hope that it made you feel better because it was very touching tribute to your Grandma.

You are cracking me up! I had forgotten some of those things and you brought them right back to me, as if she were sitting right in front of me, doing them. She DID have some pretty wet kisses. And BOGGLE! Oh my gosh, yes, she was ruthless about it! And her and grandpa switching around the letters and changing some of them to "make it a better game". Why did they even bother shaking it up? African Voilets = Grandma. She would "tuck" her paintbrushes, sometimes too good and she couldn't find them. Remember how you'd find food in cupboards that held dishes? And her sabbath dishes and tablecloths? Turning on the stereo louder and louder when we would spend the night if we slept later than she thought we should be? Her smoothies, before they got yucky. Rolling her hair on Friday nighrs.
